City of Atlanta Launches Accela Automation

On November 30, 2009, the City of Atlanta will launch a new web-based workflow management system.  Accela is a system that allows Atlanta residents, city agencies and planning field staff to automate assigned tasks in permitting, code enforcement, community development, planning, inspections and emergency response.   Through the use of a centralized database information will be more accessible and tasks done more efficiently.

The launch of these on-line services is an important step in the City’s goal to provide increased access to many of its building and planning activities.  Residents and business owners can use the web portal to apply and pay for permits, schedule inspections, check the status of a permit, complaint inspection, or print and approved permit directly from the Internet.  By allowing constituents to complete the entire application process on-line, the City is streamlining the process, and freeing up valuable staff time to process more complex applications.

The benefits of the new software are:

Residents

  • Code Inspection updates will be real time, instantaneous, which allows the information to be more accurate.
  • Residents can go online and post code violation complaints.
  • Residents can follow concerns and status updates via the web and the conclusion of their code compliance work orders.

City Agencies (field staff)

  • Field Staff can conduct more inspections because it is automated rather than officers having to physically come in the office to prepare documents.
  • With new wireless printers, officers can print citations and notices of violations in their vehicles.

Increasing resident access to government services is an important goal for the City and Accela allows the City to more efficiently ensure safe and sanitary conditions in housing and commercial properties through effective code enforcement efforts.
